August Life Skill Focus: Confidence

What To Do When Fear Shows Up

By Alvas, Kwan Jang Nim
Director, USK Karate

One of the biggest misunderstandings about confidence is that confident people do not feel fear, nerves, or anxiety.

That is not true.

Confidence is not the absence of fear. Confidence is the ability to take the next right action while fear is present.

This is an important lesson for children because many kids believe they need to “feel ready” before they try something hard. They think they need to feel brave before they speak up, try a new skill, perform in front of others, test for their next belt, or walk into class on a difficult day.

But confidence does not usually come before action.

Confidence is built through action.

At USK Karate, we teach our students that fear is not a stop sign. Fear is information. It tells us something matters, something is challenging, or we are stepping outside of our comfort zone. The goal is not to make fear disappear. The goal is to manage it, direct it, and move forward anyway.

That process starts with self-talk.

Children often do not realize how powerful their inner voice is. When a child says, “I can’t do this,” their body listens. Their shoulders drop. Their breathing changes. Their focus narrows.

But when they learn to change that message, they begin to change their state.

“I can try.”
“I can take one step.”
“I have done hard things before.”
“I do not have to be perfect. I just have to begin.”

That kind of self-talk does not remove fear, but it gives the child something stronger to focus on. It shifts their mind from panic to possibility.

The next step is breathing.

When children feel nervous, embarrassed, overwhelmed, or afraid, their breathing often becomes shallow and fast. This can make the body feel even more anxious. One of the simplest tools we can teach our children is to pause, breathe deeply, and regain control of their body.

A calm breath tells the body, “I am safe. I am in control. I can handle this.”

That is why martial arts training is so valuable. In the do jang, students learn how to control their body under pressure. They learn how to breathe when tired, focus when nervous, stand tall when people are watching, and keep going when something feels difficult.

Then comes the most important step: action.

Self-talk prepares the mind. Breathing calms the body. But action is what builds confidence.

A child becomes more confident by raising their hand, stepping onto the mat, trying the kick, saying the words, performing the form, answering the question, or standing in front of the class.

Every small act of courage becomes proof.

Proof that they can handle discomfort.
Proof that they can recover from mistakes.
Proof that they are stronger than their nerves.
Proof that fear does not have to control them.

As parents, one of the best things we can do is stop rescuing our children from every uncomfortable feeling. Of course, we want them to feel safe and loved. But if we remove every challenge, every nerve, and every hard moment, we also remove the opportunity for confidence to grow.

Instead of saying, “Don’t be scared,” we can say, “It is okay to be scared. Take a breath. Tell yourself you can try. Now take one step.”

That one step matters.

Confidence is not built in one big moment. It is built through hundreds of small moments where a child learns, “I was nervous, but I did it anyway.”

This month, as we focus on the Life Skill of Confidence, our goal is to help students understand that confidence is something they can summon. It is not something they have to wait for. Through strong self-talk, controlled breathing, and brave action, children can learn to face fear, manage anxiety, and move forward with strength.

That lesson goes far beyond martial arts.

It helps them in school, friendships, performances, competitions, tests, and difficult conversations.

It helps them become leaders.

Because confident children are not children who never feel afraid.

Confident children are children who know what to do when fear shows up.

August - Bar Evaluation

Attend your normal classes, and the teachers will ask you to evaluate afterwards. This is a required low-pressure, supportive check-in—designed to help students feel confident and prepared.

What Are Bars & Bar Evaluations?

Bars are short, in-class required checkpoints that help us measure progress and readiness—step by step, throughout the quarter.

During Bar Evaluations, students may be asked to demonstrate:

Answering basic questions about their training

Forms, basic techniques, or kicks taught so far

Properly tying their belt

Check Resources in the USK App for specific details on what’s required for your specific rank!

Each Age Group and Belt rank have specific items.

🛡️ How Does It All Work?

To be eligible for Gup Testing and the next belt, students complete three bars (in order):
🔴 Red Bar
🔵 Blue Bar
⚫ Black Bar

Bars are earned in order, so each step builds on the last. If you miss eval week, contact your teacher for a make up date.

Once all three are earned, your student is confident and prepared for testing!
