At USK Karate, respect begins on the inside.
Before we can truly honor others, we must first develop self-respect —
the belief that we are worthy of care, effort, and growth.

For children, self-respect shows up in the small choices they make every day:

- Taking pride in their appearance by keeping their uniform neat and tied.

- Pushing themselves to give full effort in class, even when it’s tough.

- Speaking kindly to themselves instead of saying, “I can’t.”

- Making healthy decisions—like choosing to move their body, eat well, or get enough sleep.

As parents, we play a powerful role in shaping how our children see themselves.
Here are a few simple ways to help your child build self-respect at home:

- Model it. Children mirror what they see. When you take care of your own health, speak positively about yourself, and honor your commitments, they learn that self-respect is important.

- Encourage responsibility. Giving kids age-appropriate chores or tasks helps them see that their contributions matter. This builds both confidence and pride.

- Praise effort, not just results. When your child works hard—even if they don’t “win”—acknowledge their discipline and courage. This teaches them to value their own growth.

- Set boundaries. Self-respect grows when kids learn it’s okay to say “no” to things that are harmful or distracting. Guide them to make choices that reflect their values.

This October, let’s remind our students that respecting themselves is the foundation for respecting others. When a child knows they are worthy, they naturally treat others with the same care and kindness.

Self-respect is the spark that lights the path to confidence, discipline, and leadership—and it begins with the lessons they practice every day here at USK.
