September Life Skill Focus: Discipline
Doing What Needs To Be Done

At USK Karate, we define discipline as:
Doing what you should do, when you’re supposed to do it, whether or not you want to do it.
That last part is the key.
Most children can do the right thing when they feel motivated. Discipline is learning to do it even when they don’t feel like it.
And that skill has to be developed.
Parents can help by creating simple routines and responsibilities at home. Let your child pack their karate bag, clean their room, finish homework before screen time, help with chores, and experience small consequences when they forget something.
Try not to negotiate every expectation. Sometimes, “Yes, you still have to do it” is an important lesson.
Also, praise the discipline—not just the result.
Instead of only saying, “Great job,” try:
“
You kept going even when it was hard.”
“You did what you needed to do before playing.”
“That took discipline.”
Finally, don’t rush to remove every moment of frustration or discomfort. Children build discipline by learning that they can handle difficult, boring, or inconvenient moments and keep going.
The goal isn’t simply to raise children who listen to adults.
The goal is to raise young people who can eventually tell themselves what needs to be done—and then do it.
That is discipline.

Attend your normal classes, and the teachers will ask you to evaluate afterwards. This is a required low-pressure, supportive check-in—designed to help students feel confident and prepared.
❓ What Are Bars & Bar Evaluations?
Bars are short, in-class required checkpoints that help us measure progress and readiness—step by step, throughout the quarter.
During Bar Evaluations, students may be asked to demonstrate:
Answering basic questions about their training
Forms, basic techniques, or kicks taught so far
Properly tying their belt
Check Resources in the USK App for specific details on what’s required for your specific rank!
Each Age Group and Belt rank have specific items.
🛡️ How Does It All Work?
To be eligible for Gup Testing and the next belt, students complete three bars (in order):
🔴 Red Bar
🔵 Blue Bar
⚫ Black Bar
Bars are earned in order, so each step builds on the last. If you miss eval week, contact your teacher for a make up date.
Once all three are earned, your student is confident and prepared for testing!
